We must use time as a tool, not as a couch.
— John F. Kennedy
Welcome, fellow Gent.
Today I want to talk about something that everyone has in equal measure — time. And more importantly, how we measure it. There are different occasions when knowing the time matters more than others — and how you check it makes a difference. In this post, I want to share why I believe an analogue timepiece is far superior to its digital counterparts like smartwatches or smartphones.
It keeps you present
When you check the time, you usually want one thing: the time. An analogue watch gives you exactly that — no distractions, no notifications. We’ve all experienced it: we reach for our phone to check the time, only to get lost in notifications, emails, or weather updates… and still not know what time it is.
Modern devices are built to distract — and they’re excellent at it.
Beyond that, glancing at your watch is an elegant, subtle gesture. It says: I’m checking the time, but I’m still here. Reaching for your phone, on the other hand, often gives the impression that your attention has left the room.
A reflection of your character
There’s a watch for every kind of Gentleman — field watches, pilot watches, diving watches, minimalist dress watches. Whether you’re extravagant and wear a statement piece, or discreet with a slim, understated one — your watch reflects your state of mind.
And best of all: you can change. Just like your mood, your values, your journey.
One purpose — done right
In software development, there’s a concept called Curly’s Law: a function should do one thing — and do it well.
A watch follows that principle. Its single, refined purpose is to tell the time. And it does it beautifully. No distractions, no battery anxiety. Just clean, precise function.
Yes, I own a smartwatch — and it’s great for tracking hikes or routes. But rarely do I check the time while hiking. That device has another purpose. My watch has only one — and it fulfills it perfectly.
A fashion statement
Your watch doesn’t just reflect who you are. It completes your outfit.
An oversized chronograph might draw attention. A subtle, slim timepiece may signal restraint and class. As a Gentleman, you choose not just what fits — but what speaks.
A moment to share
I remember the day my son first asked about my watch. I’ve worn the same Junkers automatic watch for nearly 15 years — with an open caseback. When he saw the movement of the gears, he was fascinated. He still watches it, quietly mesmerized. I can only imagine what goes through his mind.
A mechanical watch teaches us something we too easily forget: time is always moving — with or without us. The sweeping second hand is a constant, silent reminder to act.
Time to wrap up
Over the years, I’ve tried everything — smartwatches, phones, even going without. But I always return to the analogue. I love my Junkers — not just because it tells the time, but because it tells a story. One that only runs because I keep moving.
And that’s what a Gentleman does.
He keeps moving.
Purposefully.
